Empowering women to achieve the Birth they want
****************************************************************
WHAT IS A DOULA?
As a Birth Doula, I recognize a woman’s power in labor to help ensure a safe & satisfying birth experience. I have completed training approved by DONA International and I draw my professional training and knowledge to provide emotional support, physical comfort and communication to ensure that you have the information you need to make informed choices as they arise in labor. I can provide reassurance and perspective to you and your partner, make suggestions for labor progress and assist in general massage, breathing techniques, positioning & other techniques for comfort. I am independent and self-employed. As your doula, I am working for you, not your caregiver or hospital.
Before labor
I will meet with you and your partner before labor to become acquainted, and discuss your priorities and any fears or concerns and discuss your birth plan. I will want to know your own best ways of coping with pain and fatigue and how you and your partner foresee working together. We will remain in touch by telephone and or email.
When You Are In Labor
I prefer that you call me when you feel labor has begun, even if you feel you do not need me physically. I can answer questions and give suggestions over the phone. Together we can chose if I should come right then or wait for further change. I usually meet at your home and labor together with you there. As labor progresses we will transfer to your birth room, birth center or hospital. However, some circumstances exist (doctors/midwife’s orders) when we would meet you at the hospital. I will remain with you throughout labor and birth.
After Birth
I usually remain with you for one to two hours after birth, until you are comfortable and your family is ready for quiet time together. I will take photographs and help you with initial breastfeeding. (If desired)
I will return to your home within a few weeks after the birth to review the experience with you and share feedback with you about my role.
As Doulas, We Do Not:
• perform clinical tasks, such as (but not limited to) checking fetal heart tones, vaginal exams and taking blood pressure. We are here to provide only physical comfort and emotional support.
• make decisions for you. We will help you get the information necessary to make informed decision.
• speak to the staff on your behalf. We will discuss your concerns with you and suggest options, but you or your partner will speak directly to the staff.
Clinical trials have demonstrated that the presence of a doula is also associated with:
• Reduced medical interventions
• Reduced duration of labor
• Reduced cesarean rates
• Fewer Episiotomies
• Break the Fear-Tension-Pain Cycle through constant education and support.
• Constant presence throughout your pregnancy and your labor until 1-2 hours after birth.
• Increase chances of successful breastfeeding
• More positive birth experience for mother and partner
